Technological advances had seen an enormous rise in digital nomadism, more so after the pandemic when people got to experience remote work for the first time. The days of needing to be in an office, sitting at a desk for 9 hours at a time, are quickly becoming outdated. Hence, it is essential to transfer your skills and create time freedom for yourself to focus on other things. 

 Remote working is for everyone; you can also have a slice of the pie! You can transfer your skills and create time and freedom; believe it or not, these jobs are easier to access. People deserve the flexibility and freedom that they desire.

In this blog post, I discuss how you can transfer your skills and create time freedom, the benefits of remote working, the most common types of remote jobs, and some real-life examples. Whether you’re looking to create time freedom or just want to work from home, I’ve covered it all for you!

Time Freedom

The benefits of remote working are vast. First and foremost, it allows for much more flexibility in terms of hours and where you work, which is why so many people prefer this way of working. Who wants to drag themselves out of bed in the morning to commute or spend all day sitting in an office? After getting the sweet taste of freedom and remote working during the pandemic, very few people want to return to the workplace and are pleading to continue as they are. Let’s face it; it’s not too much to ask.

Remote working is perfect for creating more flexibility in your life. The hours saved from not needing to travel to work and not needing to get yourself “office-ready” are directly invested in you. This frees up more time to do the things you find important, whether taking time out by relaxing on the sofa, binging on your favorite boxsets, or spending time with friends. Your time is precious and should be cherished. Regardless of what you choose to do with it, it’s still your time, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Commute Less, Save More

Many financial benefits come with being a remote worker. Commuting is expensive! With the rising cost of fuel and public transport, it’s no wonder that people prefer to work from home. On top of this, you can save money on food costs too. A lot of people buy their lunch at (or on their way to) work, which (in the UK) is around £10 per day – this might not seem like much when you tap your card at the checkout, but by the time you add in a few coffees from Starbucks and office treats…I’ll leave you to do the maths.

Confused.com reported that people working from home save around £300 a month. That’s huge and something that would give Kirsty Allsopp a run for her money after she attempted to publicly ruin millennials recently for not ditching their Netflix subscription costs to save for a deposit for their first home. But that’s a whole blog in itself.

Personally, as a remote worker, I now save around £22 per day on travel alone (based on what my costs were back in 2017). And with the rising cost of living, I dread to think about what that would be like now, and I’m glad I escaped when I did. 

Let’s not forget that as a remote worker, you can often choose where you work and when. This is perfect for people who need to take care of children or pets during the day, but it’s the most popular option for those that want to travel more. Many new parents have to reduce their hours or sacrifice a whole income after maternity/paternity leave, as childcare costs often exceed that of a mortgage and current government funding is unable to cover this, which is simply insane! This inflicts a terrible impact on households but having the flexibility of remote working (primarily) resolves this! Here is an essential benefit you get when you transfer your skills and create time freedom. 

With a laptop and an internet connection, you can work to your schedule from anywhere in the world! Why limit yourself?

The benefits of remote working aren’t just for workers. Businesses reap the rewards too. Employees feel more valued when their employer offers remote working – it doesn’t take a genius to conclude that a happy, healthy, valued team is more productive. This also increases engagement and staff retention. Another significant benefit is cost savings on rent for office space, staff mileage expenses, car allowances, etc.

A highly informative survey by Forbes reported the top 5 benefits when you transfer your skills and create time freedom.

Who Needs An Office Anyway?

Commuting and needing to be in an office are becoming outdated. With technological advancements, it’s now easier than ever to collaborate with others no matter where they are in the world. Our team works remotely at The Lifestyle Lab, and many of us have never met each other. We use Monday to manage our projects, Zoom to catch up and meet regularly, Slack to communicate, WhatsApp for team banter, and Discord to be at one with our community.

During our time together, we’ve had meetings where the team members have joined from all over the place, including beach clubs, jungles, building sites, and many airports.

The Future of Working

As mentioned earlier, remote working is rapidly becoming the norm. Studies have shown that by 2020, 50% of the workforce will be doing remote work. But what’s the reason for this shift?

Before the pandemic, companies were generally reluctant to let employees work remotely from home out of a self-driven fear that people would be lying in bed or on the sofa in pajamas and watching TV instead of working. Even I experienced this in previous roles – I had no base and visited different locations daily, but despite having the tools I needed, I was never allowed to work from home to catch up on admin.

In 2020, the pandemic forced (almost) the entire world’s workforce into remote work, which has now brought the masses to accept and believe in the practicalities of working from home.

Since lockdown, it has become the norm to contact a “call center” to hear someone’s dog barking in the background or make other general low-grade noise. Last year I heard someone cooking while contacting my mortgage provider with a query! A few years ago, who would have thought that call centers for big corporations such as EE, Admiral Insurance, and Natwest would run entirely from people’s homes?

Remote jobs aren’t reserved for the highly skilled (such as web developers or coders) and are not just for those who want to travel – hell no. As mentioned above, anyone can work remotely.

Transfer Your Skills

It’s important to know that your job title does not determine your skills or sector! A teacher isn’t confined to teaching kids their ABCs and how to calculate the square root of a triangle. They have transferable skills that can be utilised in various jobs.

For example, teachers are highly organised, often very creative, great with planning, great communicators, patient, confident speakers, and proficient in using computing software such as Microsoft Office. These skills are for more than just teaching, right? Teachers can become fantastic project managers, copywriters, researchers, or people managers – all of which can be remote. 

Let’s take a retail manager as another example. People that work in retail are not confined to working in shops; the skills they acquire are highly transferrable. Many retail workers up-skill themselves and become fantastic HR managers (due to their people skills) and mortgage advisors (due to their problem-solving abilities).

Remote Working is For Everyone!

The team at The Lifestyle Lab is also a perfect example of how you can transfer any skills into other career paths. Let’s look at one of our Co-Founders, Lewis, who served as a member of the Parachute Regiment, which is the airborne infantry regiment of the British Army. You’re probably wondering how he transferred his skills from fighting the Taliban to the financial services industry? You probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you that following two tours of Afghanistan, he went on to become a Client Acquisition Manager in the finance sector, would you?

When thinking about what skills you have to transfer, go further than surface level to get deep into the core of what YOU have to offer. Don’t put yourself in a box defined by your sector or job title. Let’s look at Lewis again.

Although Lewis served as an elite in the UK military and was trained to be hard as nails, the skills he could bring to his role within the finance sector (not directly associated with war) were perfectly matched.

  • 💣 Highly attentive – if he didn’t pay close attention to the task, he could have killed himself.
  • 💣 An immense drive for perfection – when you’re at war, there is no room for error, period.
  • 💣 Strategic thinking and high-level problem solving – primed for rapid deployment, no big or small task can’t be tackled head-on.

When you think about Lewis’ core skills described above, despite how random the career swap was, you can now see exactly how they were transferred. When dealing with finances and people within it, the industry needs people that operate as close as possible to perfection. You wouldn’t want someone who was easily distracted, lazy, and unable to problem solve handling your finances, right? No, you want someone that works like a machine! It’s your turn to make a plan and take action today! Sit down, grab yourself a notepad and pen, and start brainstorming what transferable skills you have. Think like Lewis.

Here are some probing questions to get you started:

  • ❓ What job role do you currently have?
  • ❓ What would you like your day-to-day to look like?
  • ❓ Are there existing remote opportunities readily available at your workplace?
  • ❓ Do you dislike your job? List what you don’t like (make them non-negotiable)
  • ❓ What skills do you utilise in your job?
  • ❓ What other skills do you have that you can offer to a job?
  • ❓ Do you work best under pressure or in more laid-back circumstances?
  • ❓ What type of remote job would you like to do?
  • ❓ Would you like to upskill yourself?

Once you answer these questions, the rest will flow and start falling into place – you just have to get the ball rolling. Upskill, Skill Stack and Then Exit Stage Left!

If you want to get into freelance work and find remote jobs, the best way to do so is to learn some new skills. In the words of Steven Bartlett in his best-selling book Happy Sexy Millionaire, “stack skills” and lots of them. This can mean taking online courses, reading books, or attending workshops. Often, the more random the skill stack, the more niche you offer to a company or job role.

Using me as an example. I studied pharmacy in university and stacked a shit load of skills from working in the world of healthcare, clinical innovation, and operational management. Who would have thought I’d now be making a living by onboarding people onto a global online platform, email marketing, and copywriting! And not forgetting, writing sick blogs about entrepreneurship, mindset and online incomes (just let me have this humble brag please, I really enjoy writing these blogs). When I look back, I was skill-stacking like crazy and didn’t even know it.

An essential point to note when you want to transfer your skill and create time freedom is that You can constantly upskill yourself to make yourself more attractive to potential employers. If you’re struggling to find remote jobs that don’t match your skill set, don’t despair! Plenty of online courses will help you develop your skills for specific jobs.

This blog is quite a monster, but I mean it when I tell you it’s been written from a place of passion. I speak to new people daily who all have one thing in common and that’s being fed up of exchanging their time for shit pay, only being able to take 4 weeks of holiday a year, and who are fed up of working for profit-hungry companies who don’t give two-shites about their workers.

This is something I empathize with because after 17 years of career grinding, chasing fancy job titles that didn’t fulfill me, and commuting the length and breadth of the UK in my free time and not getting paid a penny for it, I was able to leave that life behind me.
