In this blog post will discuss how to recognise and overcome imposter syndrome, the types, and also explore the causes behind it.  We’ll also discuss the characteristics of Imposter Syndrome and social media’s roles. Finally, we’ll provide tips to find the confidence to be your true, authentic, unapologetic self.

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter Syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud or not worthy. You may never have heard of Imposter Syndrome but it’s more common than you might think – 70% of people will experience imposter syndrome at some point in their lives. That’s a lot!

Feeling like an imposter in your own life makes you feel like you’re not good enough and makes you feel like you only achieve things because of good luck, regardless of your hard work, talent and experience.

What Are The Causes?

There are many different triggers that can cause imposter syndrome. For some people, it may be a major life event such as starting a new job or going to university. For others, it may be a smaller event such as giving a presentation or receiving criticism.

It is important to remember that Imposter Syndrome is not caused by external factors – it is internalised, it’s in us. Our upbringing, the people we surround ourselves with and our individual personalities can also contribute to it too.

5 Types of Imposter Syndrome To Be Aware Of

The Perfectionist: You feel like you have to be perfect in everything you do in order to be successful. Any mistakes you make are magnified and you berate yourself for them.

The Over-Achiever: You feel like you have to achieve more than everyone else in order to be successful. You compare yourself to others constantly and feel like you’re not doing enough.

The Expert: You feel like you need to know everything about your field in order to be successful and you’re afraid of being exposed as a fraud if you don’t know everything.

The Soloist: You feel like you can’t ask for help or delegate tasks because it will make you look like you’re not capable. You’re afraid of asking for help because you feel like you should be able to do it all on your own.

The Natural Born Leader: You feel like you have to be the leader in every situation and that anything less than that is failure. You put immense pressure on yourself to be the best and feel like you’re not good enough if you’re not in charge.

What Are The Characteristics?

Imposter Syndrome is a little more complex than we think. As well as being many types, there are also several characteristics too.

Feeling like a fraud: You feel like you’re not good enough and that someone is going to find out that you’re a total imposter.

Self-doubt: You doubt your accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a “fraud”.

Perfectionism: You feel like you have to be perfect in everything you do in order to be successful.

Impostorism: You feel like an imposter in your own life and that you only achieve things because of good luck, regardless of your hard work, talent and experience.

Feeling overwhelmed: You feel like you can’t ask for help or delegate tasks because it will make you look like you’re not capable.

What’s Social Media Got To Do With It?

It’s no surprise that social media is be linked to Imposter Syndrome. It feeds our insecurities as we constantly compare our lives to others and seek perfection. We’ve all been there when we’ve compared our clothes, our hair, our cars and even our relationships to those we see on social media.

When we compare ourselves to others, we are more likely to feel like imposters. Think about – we only see the highlight reel of other people’s lives on our socials, we rarely see the raw struggles.

Social media can be a breeding ground for perfectionism. We are constantly seeing peoples perfect lives and comparing ourselves to them which inevitable can trigger Imposter Syndrome. I wrote a great blog about the true reality behind the perfect lives we see on social media, be sure to check it out.

How Can I Feel Less Like an Imposter?

There are several things you can do to ease the thoughts of Imposter Syndrome and it starts with seeking out supportive relationships, having self-compassion and setting realistic goals for yourself.

Finding people who will support you and build you up, is so important. These type of people will never force unrealistic ideals onto you and will love you for you are. These people will remind you of your worth when you’re feeling doubtful and ignite your life with positivity. That’s why community is everything to us at The Lifestyle Lab! Everybody Makes Mistakes

Always be kind to yourself and cut yourself some slack! Remember that nobody is perfect, despite their efforts to make their lives appear that way. It’s impossible to be perfect – we’re not robots, we’re human and mistakes are good, it’s how we evolve and learn.

When setting goals for yourself, make sure they are realistic. Don’t go comparing yourself to others because as individuals, our lives are different, as are our experiences. It’s good to dream big but if your goals are too , you’re more likely to feel like an imposter when you don’t achieve it. It’s part of the process of life to fail sometimes, so if there are goals that you don’t hit, it’s totally fine – turn the negative into a positive, give yourself a pat on the back for trying and take on what you learnt into the process.
