Chiang Mai, Thailand (my best location)

Chiang Mai is one of the most popular cities in the world for digital nomads. The city is known for its low cost of living, warm weather, and friendly culture. The city is located in Northern Thailand, surrounded by mountains and rich culture. The city is home to a large ex-pat population and a great place to meet people. 

The cost of living in Chiang Mai is the lowest of any city on this list. The average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in the city is $650 per month. The cost of food in the city is significantly cheaper than in cities like New York, with a meal at a mid-level restaurant averaging $6.50. The average monthly internet bill in Chiang Mai is $30. 

The city has a tropical climate where you can expect warm temperatures year round. Digital nomads who wish to work in Chiang Mai can apply for the Thailand Smart Visa as Thailand does not have a digital nomad visa. The qualified applicants are granted up to four years of authorized residence and employment in the nation.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a city that’s quickly becoming a digital nomad hotspot. This is especially the case for those looking to work remotely in the tech industry. Lisbon has been attracting tech start-ups and is quickly becoming known as one of the best locations for digital nomads who work in the tech industry. It’s also one of the most walkable cities in the world, making it easy to navigate without a car.

The average internet bill in Canggu is $30. The Indonesia business visa is perfect for digital nomads in Canggu. However, note that you cannot work for or be hired by an Indonesian company with this visa. 

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is one of the most popular cities in the world, especially among digital nomads. Its beaches, art, architecture, and amazing food are world renown. The city is home to a large ex-pat community with a vibrant culture. Barcelona is a great place to live and a great place to visit

The cost of living in Barcelona is lower than in Lisbon and Canggu but higher than in Chiang Mai. For a  one-bedroom apartment, the average price is $850 per month. Barcelona’s food price is also lower than other cities on this list, with a meal at a mid-level restaurant averaging $16. The average internet bill in Barcelona is $35. 

The city has a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures year-round. The most prevalent types of nomad visas available to digital nomads include: The Spain Schengen Visa, The Spain Golden Visa, and The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa. Each of the aforementioned visas has distinct requirements and an application procedure of its own. It’s advisable to learn about the visa and the application procedure before submitting an application.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is one of the oldest cities in Europe, located in the continent’s center. The city is known for its baths, architecture, and culture. Budapest is a great place to live and visit with a low cost of living and welcoming culture. The city is home to a large ex-pat community and a great place to meet people.
